Learn about Palm Beach Gardens, FL

Originally a land of livestock ranches, pine forests, and swamplands, the city of Palm Beach Gardens is now home to more than 50,600 residents.

This city owes its existence to businessman and philanthropist John D. MacArthir, who bought 2,600 acres of land in Palm Beach County with the intention of developing them into residential communities. This property included most of today’s Palm Beach Gardens and several other towns in the county.

The city was incorporated in 1959, but it only existed on paper at that time. In 1960, the town was recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau as having a population of just one person, a squatter who was allowed by MacArthur to stay in his property. In the following decades, however, the city experienced rapid development.

Palm Beach Gardens is home to two banyan trees, which Macarthur ordered relocated to the city in the 1970s. The first tree was saved from being cut down in the city of Lake Park and cost Macarthur $30,000 to move. The two banyans still stand today and are featured in the city’s coat of arms.
