Learn about West Palm Beach, FL

The skyline of West Palm Beach, Florida

Home to more than 102,400 residents, the city of west Palm Beach is the county seat of Palm Beach County in the state of Florida. Incorporated in 1894, the city is the oldest municipality in the Miami metropolitan area, predating the incorporation of the city of Miami by two years.

The land that was to become West Palm Beach was first settled between the 1870s and the 1880s by people from different parts of the United States. The area had grown into small, thriving community before being formally incorporated on November 5, 1894.

In its early days up to the second decade of the 20th century, the town’s economy grew steadily, thanks to the contribution of industries like tourism and agriculture. A population explosion followed in the 1920s during the Florida land boom, a time when construction projects, businesses, and public services flourished. In just 10 years from 1920 to 1930, the population grew from 8,659 to 26,610. Many of the city’s heritage buildings were constructed during this era.

Today, West Palm Beach is known for its many historic neighborhoods, its world class venues for culture and the arts, and its many shopping destinations.
