Learn About Belle Glade, FL
Located in Palm Beach County in the state of Florida, Belle Glade is situated within the subtropical Everglades and on the shore of Lake Okeechobee.
Settlement of the area where the city now stands began with the controlling of the lake's floodwaters. In 1913, three major canals, namely the Hillsboro Canal, the North New River Canal, and the Miami Canal were built to protect Southern Florida from flooding.
During its early years, Belle Glade was originally called Hillsboro. Its community council was formed in 1919 and served as the town's governing body until its incorporation in 1928. It is believed that the community was renamed "Belle Glade" when residents were asked to contribute ideas for a name and someone suggested that it should be Belle Glade because the settlement was "the belle of the Glades."
At present, the city is home to more than 17,800 residents. Belle Glade has become a popular destination for fishing and camping, and it is also known for its agricultural and ornamental plant farms.
