Learn About Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Fort Lauderdale is the seat of Broward County in the State of Florida. It's fairly close to Miami and has a total area of 38.6 square miles. As of 2012, the population stood at 170,747 residents. This makes Fort Lauderdale the 139th most populous city in the USA.

Lauderdale, Florida

The land now known as Fort Lauderdale was once populated by Tequesta Native Americans. However, their numbers fell as they made contact with European explorers in the 18th century. Smallpox killed many of the natives, resulting in the demise of the ethnic group. The land would later be controlled by the Spanish, the British and finally the American government but would remain undeveloped until the 1900s.

Originally known as the New River Valley Settlement, the city would later be renamed after a series of forts during the Second Seminole War. The forts are themselves named after Major William Lauderdale, commanding officer of the unit that constructed the first of the forts.

Like most of Florida, Fort Lauderdale gets a lot of sunshine all year long thanks to its tropical rainfall climate. This makes it ideal for people who wish to settle down and enjoy great weather along with lovely sights. Its close proximity to Miami and other economically stable Florida cities makes it ideal for commercial and residential infrastructure development.
