Located in Broward County in the state of Florida, Hallandale Beach is home to the Mardi Gras Casino and the Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino — two historic entertainment and recreation facilities that were built in the 1930s.
The city was named after Luther Halland, son of a Swedish minister, who was tasked by the Florida East Coast railroad to found the settlement in the late 19th century. The community — initially named Halland but later called Hallandale — was established in 1895. It officially became a town in 1927, when it had about 1,500 residents. In 1947, Hallandale was reincorporated as a city. In 1999, the city changed its name again to Hallandale Beach.
Today, the city is home to more than 38,600 residents.
