Learn About Key Biscayne, FL
A short drive over the Rickenbacker Causeway will bring visitors of Miami-Dade County to Key Biscayne, a beautiful island town of more than 12,800 people which lies south of Miami Beach.
The city owes its existence mainly to the causeway, which was built in 1947. Before large-scale residential property development began on the island, its northern portion served as a coconut plantation during the first half of the 20th century. In the past, large parts of the island were owned by the families of industrialists John Matheson and James Deering, as well as by Cuban political exile José Manuel Áleman. The area was incorporated as a new municipality in 1991.
Today, Key Biscayne is famous for its sunny beaches and its large hotel, condominium, and resort complexes. The city is also sandwiched between two important parks — the Cradon Park in the north and the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park in the south, where the Cape Florida Lighthouse can be found.
