Learn About Miami Beach, FL
The beautiful island resort city of Miami Beach is a cultural hodgepodge popular for its Art Deco district, its Jewish community, its LGBT heritage, and its thriving arts scene.

The area’s modern history traces its roots to 1870, when Henry Lum and his son Charles Lum built the Biscayne House of Refuge to provide assistance to shipwrecked people. With the founding of nearby Miami in 1896, the family of horticulturist John S. Collins saw the potential of developing the island as a resort city. With the help of the Lummus brothers and the Indianapolis industrialist Carl G. Fisher, the Collins developed a wooden bridge that connected the island to the mainland, an effort which jump started the area’s real estate boom. The business partners promoted the new Miami Beach as a playground for the rich and famous, and soon people from all over the United States were flocking to it.
In 1915, the town of Miami Beach was chartered and incorporated. In 1917, it became a city. Between the 1920s and the 1940s, the city experienced rapid growth in the construction of apartments, hotels, and other structures that were built in the Art Deco style.
In the second half of the 20th century, the demographics of the city was enriched by the thousands of immigrants that came in, which included people from Northern United States, Cuban exiles, and members of the LGBT community. In 1979, the city’s Art Deco district was also inscribed into the list of National Register of Historic Places.
