Learn About Opa-Locka, FL
The city of Opa-locka is located in Miami-Dade County in the state of Florida. Established in 1926 through the efforts of aviation pioneer and U.S. aircraft industry founder Glenn Curtis, the city is famous for its quirky name and buildings.
Opa-locka’s name comes from the Native American Muscogee phrase “Opa-tisha-wocka-locka,” which means “a large island sheltered in many trees and swamps.” The name was shortened to just “Opa-locka” by the residents.
The city was developed with the theme “Arabian Nights” in mind. Thus, there are many structures built in the Moorish revival style throughout the city. Opa-locka also has street names like Ali Baba, Sharazad, and Aladdin.
At the height of the construction boom, more than 100 Moorish-style buildings were built in the city. In 1926, a hurricane ravaged through the Opa-locka, but 20 of these structures survived. Today, they continue to give this city of more than 16,000 people its unique character.
